Shoulder Impingement Syndrome
Overview
This is a painful pinching of soft tissues in your shoulders.
Causes
This is caused when these tissues rub and press against the acromion (a bony projection of the shoulder blade). The most at risk for shoulder impingement syndrome are those who do a lot of overhead motions. This is seen a lot in swimmers, baseball players, tennis players, painters and construction workers.
Symptoms
Symptoms of shoulder impingement syndrome are tenderness, swelling, pain and stiffness in the shoulder. Pain can sometimes spread from the front of the shoulder to the arm.
Treatment
Treatment includes rest, medications, injections, physical therapy and sometimes surgery.
