Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy or pool therapy consists of an exercise program that is performed in water. Witham has a warm water pool (90-93 degree range) that benefits patients who have experienced muscle spasms, back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis and some degenerative diseases.

Activity performed in the water, allows for buoyancy to assist in supporting the weight of the patient. This reduces the force of stress on joints so that movement is less painful. The viscosity of the water provides an excellent source of resistance for strengthening without adding weights. Hydrostatic pressure of the water can decrease swelling and improve joint position awareness. This is also an excellent environment to support balance training, as the patient can be challenged to balance without the fear of falling or injury. Aquatic therapy can also be an excellent environment for some pediatric rehabilitation.

It is important to know that aquatic therapy is not for everyone. Those that have wounds, infections and incontinence may not be candidates to begin aquatic therapy. Approval from the physician is obtained before beginning aquatic therapy. Aquatic therapy may be combined with land-based therapy during the rehabilitation process. All patients receive personalized care from a licensed therapist at each visit, with exercises tailored to the individual needs.
