Understanding Edema and Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a condition that causes swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs, when lymph fluid is unable to move properly through the body's lymphatic system. It can develop for a variety of reasons, including after cancer treatment, surgery, lymph node removal, injury or trauma. In some cases, it may occur without a clear cause. When lymphedema is present, there is a greater risk of infection and the development of wounds. Early treatment can prevent serious complications.

Venous insufficiency occurs when the veins in the legs have difficulty returning blood to the heart, causing blood to pool in the lower extremities. People with diabetes, heart conditions or obesity may be at a higher risk of developing this condition. Over time, venous insufficiency can contribute to swelling and may increase the risk of developing lymphedema.
