Witham Maternity Center
At Witham, we’ll help you plan each step of your pregnancy – from baby’s first heartbeats to your very special delivery in our Maternity Center. Through it all we’ll focus our attention on you, answering every question you have, so you can feel better prepared for Baby’s big day.
Our Maternity care options balance the health of you and your baby with your wishes
As you prepare for your baby’s arrival, we know that you have a lot of decisions to make. At Witham — the only hospital providing maternity care in and around Boone County — we make the decisions about childbirth easier for you.
We offer:
Personalized care: We treat you as a person and not a number. Each of our nurses strives to become personally acquainted with you and your unique desires during labor, delivery, and recovery. Language interpretation services are available to assist in communication.
Team approach: We partner with Witham anesthesiologists for pain management during labor and delivery and with pediatrics for the care of your newborn baby.
Established team: If you’ve had a baby in our center before, you will recognize a familiar, experienced team when you return for your upcoming birthing experience.
Informative classes: We offer classes to help you prepare for childbirth, breastfeeding, and being a parent. We also offer an infant CPR class to empower you to provide initial care for your baby in the event of an emergency.
Easy referrals: When necessary, we partner on your care with doctors outside of Witham, including lactation consultants, maternal-fetal medicine specialists and neonatologists. We handle coordination for you and provide all the information the specialist needs.

Witham’s Labor and Delivery Team will surround you with attention
Pregnancy brings a range of emotions and excitement. Expectations about childbirth are natural. At Witham, we strive to give you options, and we guide you in choosing the right ones for you and your baby. All our rooms are private and designed for family-centered care. We also offer a cesarean section room and a newborn nursery.
Our OB/GYN and Maternity Center OB Laborist providers share on-call duties for labor and delivery. When you arrive in our Maternity Center, a highly skilled nursing team and the OB/GYN Provider or Maternity Center OB Laborist on call will work with you to understand any expectations you may have about the process. They will do their very best to execute your plan based on your wishes and the health of you and your baby.
If our obstetricians determine you need high-risk maternity care, we will connect you with the support you and your baby need. Our obstetricians work with maternal-fetal medicine specialists — who are high-risk, or complicated, pregnancy doctors — and hospitals that provide high-risk pregnancy care.
We offer both natural comfort techniques and medications to ease the pain
Natural comfort measures might include:
- Lamaze relaxation, breathing, touch and massage techniques
- Hydrotherapy, which involves use of a warm shower or Jacuzzi tub
- Movement out of the labor bed while continuing to monitor the baby
- Birthing balls that you could use while sitting up and swaying or rocking
Medications might include:
- Analgesics, or pain medications
- Regional anesthetic, including local, epidural, pudendal block and spinal block
- General anesthesia, which puts you to “sleep” and is used in emergency situations
Witham will care for your baby from the moment they take their first breath until it’s time to go home
We perform newborn screening tests to check hearing, the oxygen level in the blood and for jaundice. We will also take a small sample of your baby’s blood to check for genetic, hormone and metabolic conditions.
If your baby needs advanced care, we will coordinate it for you. Our pediatricians work with neonatologists, doctors who care for critically ill babies, and hospitals that have a neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU.
You’ll also leave the hospital with all of the information you need to keep your baby safe with confidence. We’ll educate you on:
- Newborn care, such as changing diapers, bathing your baby and identifying symptoms of illness and when to call your pediatrician
- Nutrition, including breastfeeding and safe formula preparation
- Safe sleep, which includes Alone, on their Back and in a Crib (ABC)
- Soothing and calming techniques, such as swaddling and use of a swaddle sack to avoid overheating and keeping your baby feeling secure
- Car seat safety, such as how to safely use car seats
- Home safety by avoiding tobacco smoke and recognizing newborn illness
We’ll support you during your hospital stay and beyond
Postpartum care includes the screenings, treatments and support a mom receives during her hospital stay and the six weeks following her child’s birth. We offer:
- Postpartum depression screening and treatment through Witham OBGYN
- Breastfeeding support from our team of certified lactation consultants who partner with you to help you exclusively breastfeed
- Education on physical changes you may experience and self-care following birth
Our classes will help prepare you for childbirth and parenting
At Witham, we believe that information leads to empowerment and that empowerment leads to healthier lives.
Our Birthdays and Beyond Class is a prenatal education program that gives you the information you need to help you and your baby stay healthy and safe during labor and delivery and beyond. You’ll learn about topics including your childbirth experience, breastfeeding, newborn care and infant CPR. These FREE sessions are held quarterly on the first Saturday in February, May, August, and November. You may choose to attend all day or pick the sessions designed for your stage of pregnancy. In-Person classes are held in the North Pavilion, Entrance B in the Jack Jones Community Room. Click here to register and view event details.
Join our Breastfeeding Support Group to learn the advantages of breastfeeding, how to properly position your baby so they latch and how to pump and store your breastmilk. The group meets every Monday (except holidays) from 10 - 11 a.m. in the Witham Health Services V.I.P. Dining Room. The support group is an opportunity for mothers to meet and discuss their breastfeeding needs in a group setting with other mothers. Meetings are facilitated by a board-certified lactation consultant. The meetings allow time for breastfeeding infants, checking before and after feeding weights, and an opportunity to gain support from other mothers. The support group meetings are open to breastfeeding mothers and babies of any age. There is no cost associated with this support group and no registration is required. An individual lactation consultation with a board-certified lactation consultant may be necessary if you or your baby have additional breastfeeding needs.

Before your child’s birth you may want to plan ahead
We want you to feel fully present for the birth of your child and take the time you need to recover and bond with your baby. To ease the process from check-in to taking your baby home, there are a few things to start thinking about early, before you’re ready to deliver:
- Paternity affidavit (PA): If your partner’s last name is different from yours and you want your baby to take their last name, you need to complete a paternity affidavit. You and your partner must bring your current photo identification cards to the hospital to complete the PA. As a courtesy, we will submit the information you provide to the state of Indiana and file the affidavit for you.
- Pediatric care: After your baby is born, they are going to require their own special care and doctor. Now is the time to start thinking about establishing a clinical relationship with a pediatrician. Witham Pediatrics offers outstanding care for children of all ages, from birth through adolescence.
- Obstetrics and Gynecological care: Prenatal care is important for your own health, as well as your baby’s health. Click here to learn more about Witham OB/GYN.
