Total Knee Arthroplasty

Overview
During this procedure, your damaged knee joint is replaced with implants that recreate the femur, tibial and patellar surfaces of the knee. This can reduce pain and restore your knee function.

Preparation
In preparation for the procedure, you are anesthetized. The surgeon creates an incision to expose your knee joint.

Procedure
The damaged surfaces of your femur and tibia are removed. The surgeon carefully removes damaged cartilage and bone from your femur. Alignment guides are used to restore the mechanical axis of the femur.  Cutting jigs are used to make precise bone cuts preparing the femur for a metal implant trial. The surgeon now focuses on the tibial implant. A tibial cutting guide is utilized and a precise cut is made based off of the anatomic axis of the tibia.  The patellar articular surface is removed and the patella is prepared for a plastic implant. Trial implants are placed on the femur, tibia, and patella checking for stability of the knee, tracking, and range of motion. Bone cement is used with precise technique to secure the femoral, tibial, and patellar implants in place. The surgeon presses a liner into the tibial implant. The liner creates a smooth surface that will allow the joint to move freely.

End of Procedure
When the procedure is complete, the incision is closed and bandaged. You will be monitored as your anesthesia wears off. Your healthcare provider will give you instructions to help your recovery.
