Hip Fracture

Overview 
With this injury, the femur is broken or fractured.  The leg will be shortened and rotated and the patient will experience pain and an inability to walk.  This can damage structures around the joint.

Causes 
Hip fractures are often caused by traumatic injury. Auto accidents and falls are common culprits.

Symptoms 
A fractured hip causes severe pain. It prevents movement of your leg. If your nerves have been damaged during the fracture, you may lose sensation in your foot or ankle.

Treatment 
Surgical treatment is often recommended for hip fractures.  Depending on the location of the fracture in the femur, different treatment options will be offered.  You may benefit from physical therapy as you heal. Your healthcare provider can create a care plan that is right for your needs.
