Lateral Epicondylitis of the Elbow

Overview
This condition is often referred to as tennis elbow, which is an inflammation of the tendons that connect the muscles of the forearm to the elbow. The pain is primarily felt at the epicondyle, the bony bump on the outer side of the elbow.

Causes
Lateral epliconylitis involves the entensor muscles, which control the extension of the wrist and finders, and the extensor tendons, which anchor the muscles to the lateral epicondyle. This is caused by specific repetitive motions of the wrist and arm. The stress placed on the forearm by a tennis backswing is a common culprit. This stress causes tiny tears to develop in one or more extensor tendons which results in inflammation and pain.

Treatment
Treatment options may include rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications and stretching exercises. A brace or arm splint may be recommended as well as physical and massage therapy. In some cases steroid injections, PRP injections and even surgery is required.
