Cancer Institute
Unsurpassed Cancer Care - Radiation Oncology
Witham Health Services and St. Vincent Hospitals are pleased to offer The Cancer Institute to Boone County and surrounding communities. The Cancer Institute provides state-of-the-art radiation oncology services while addressing the needs of healing the body, mind, and spirit through patient care and education.
The Cancer Institute is proud to offer Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) to the patients of Boone County and the surrounding counties. These procedures focus the radiation beam more directly at the tumor than the conventional radiation therapy allows and it can deliver a higher, more effective dose to the tumor site. This technology reduces the number of daily treatments the physician prescribes for the patient, thereby reducing the duration of radiation therapy for the patient.
IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy) and IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy) are also offered at the Cancer Institute. The goal of IMRT is to treat the tumor while decreasing the risk of the side effects that can occur with Radiation Therapy. With use of IGRT it is possible to deliver a higher dose of radiation to the tumor, which is a definite benefit to the patient.
SRS procedures are used to treat small brain tumors. SBRT procedures are typically used to treat small lung tumors, pancreatic cancers and metastatic tumors in the liver.
