Survive an ATV Crash with Preparation and Safety Gear
July 2, 2019Sixteen-year-old Tyler Smith of Thorntown has experience riding ATVs but was riding a friend's machine on unfamiliar ground when the ATV flipped and caught his hand in the brake grip June 9, his mother, Jenny Smith said.
The trail he was riding was steep in one spot, and the ground was leaf-covered and wet, which made it extra slippery, Jenny Smith said, adding, that Tyler had never ridden on that ground before.
Brandon Horn, an orthopedic surgeon with Witham Health Services, repaired Tyler’s hand, which now has a permanent metal plate and seven screws, Jenny said, adding that she is thankful, "because it could have been way worse.”
