Witham Health Services Patient Experience Team announces Sunflower and Daisy Honoree Recipients
March 3, 2024
Congratulations to Ezekiel Howie for being named our Sunflower Honoree and Stephanie Bloomer, R.N. for being name our Daisy Honoree!
The Sunflower program at Witham is used to recognize extraordinary care and service provided by non-nursing staff. Sunflower Award nominees personify Witham's remarkable patient experience. These staff members consistently demonstrate excellence through their expertise and extraordinary compassionate care. They are recognized as outstanding role models in our Witham community. Witham recognizes an honoree twice a year.
The Daisy Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary compassionate and skillful care given by nurses every day. Witham is proud to be a Daisy Award Partner, recognizing one of our nurses with this special honor twice a year.
The Daisy Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura at the age of 33. During Pat's 8 week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. So one of the goals they set in creating a Foundation in Pat's memory was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do every day.
Zeke is currently one of our very amazing EMTs.
An excerpt from Zeke’s nomination: Ezekiel really helped care for a patient brought into the ER. He spent 40 minutes helping to clean a patient that was covered in his own stool. Zeke made sure that the patient maintained dignity. I really appreciated his extraordinary effort for this patient.
Thank you Zeke for providing this patient the personalized compassionate care he needed!
Stephanie is part of our wonderful OB team!
An excerpt from Stephanie’s nomination: Stephanie was the triage nurse during a very busy dayshift. She went down to get patient and patient initially stated she had numbness in her hand and feet and being pregnant she could have numbness from BP issues or carpal tunnel. After evaluating the patient further and monitoring the mom & baby, Stephanie asked more detailed questions based on a nurse’s instinct that something might be wrong. The patient ended up having numbness in only her left side and stated she couldn’t formulate and speak her thoughts. Stephanie immediately recognized possible stroke symptoms and performed assessments and called 3333 for the stroke team. Stephanie remained at bedside and calmly explained her concern with the patient and explained that a lot of people will be in the room shortly to evaluate her. Stephanie kept the patient calm and completely informed. Stephanie remained with the patient as she went to the ED. This patient was emergently transferred to an Indy hospital. Stephanie showed incredible nursing care because OB hardly has stroke issues or heart issues and she used her knowledge and listened to her patient. She was remarkable!!! She deserves SO MUCH RECOGNITION AND PRAISE!!!
Thank you Stephanie for following your instincts and getting this patient the personalized care she needed!
Both Ezekiel and Stephanie exemplify Witham’s commitment to excellence and personalized compassionate care. Thank you both for bringing who you are as individuals to Witham’s amazing team!
