Witham's Extended Care Unit Receives 2 Deficiency Free Surveys & has a 5-Star CMS Rating!

In July, Witham’s Extended Care Unit (ECU) had two state/federal inspections conducted by the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH). These surveys are unannounced and conducted annually.  The first annual survey was for clinical and operational compliance.  The second survey was for Life Safety Code (LSC) compliance. 

 

Following the intense multi-day surveys, Witham’s Extended Care Unit achieved Deficiency-Free Surveys for BOTH. This means that the ECU meets or exceeds all federal and state regulations to provide the highest quality care on a daily basis to our residents and their families. 

 

The first survey includes a review of residents’ clinical records, shadowing of staff members, a thorough tour of the facility, and interviews with each resident, family members, and additional staff members. This standard survey examines many criteria in the areas of Administration, Nursing, Resident Rights, Kitchen/Food Services, and the Environment.

 

The second survey focuses on Life Safety Code (LSC) compliance. The Life Safety inspection covers areas related to fire protection, protection features such as sprinklers, construction of the building, and operations.  As well, it also includes a review of emergency management and contingency planning. 

 

It is unusual for a skilled nursing facility to receive a deficiency-free survey, let alone two of them.  In addition, Witham’s Extended Care Unit has a Five-Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  This is the highest rating possible!  These ratings help consumers, families, and caregivers compare skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes more easily. 

 

We are proud of what this means for our residents and the care received.  Our core team consists of nursing and clinical services, therapy, case management, social services, life enrichment, and leadership.  In addition, we are supported by food and nutrition services, infection prevention, facilities and maintenance, information systems, and our education team.  All our teams provide excellent care with their incredible dedication, expertise, and hard work.  That has made this achievement possible.  We want to thank our residents, families, and care teams for their active participation. 

 

ECU Information

Witham’s Extended Care Unit is licensed as an 18-bed Comprehensive Care Facility.  Our specialization is in Skilled Nursing delivering Post-Acute Care, specifically Sub-Acute Rehabilitation (SAR) services.  In addition, the ECU offers Hospice and Respite services.  With a staffing ratio maximum of 1:9 Nurse-Resident ratio, personalized care is our priority.
